A mismatch, not a memory
Despite the feeling, there's no real memory being recalled during déjà vu. The leading explanation is that it's a brief glitch in how the brain tags familiarity onto an experience — a new moment gets incorrectly flagged as "already seen" by the brain's memory-processing circuitry.
The temporal lobe's role
The medial temporal lobe, including the hippocampus and surrounding structures, is where the brain evaluates whether a current experience matches something already stored in memory. Research on patients with temporal lobe epilepsy — who frequently report déjà vu right before a seizure — has been a major source of evidence linking the sensation to that specific region misfiring.
Why it happens more in younger people
Déjà vu is reported more frequently in younger adults and becomes less common with age, which has led some researchers to propose it may partly reflect a fast-maturing memory-checking system briefly overcorrecting — essentially double-checking itself and producing a false-positive familiarity signal.
