Every sleep and fitness wearable now shows you a "recovery" number, and most people treat it like a grade on a test — green means go, red means rest. That's not quite how it works. Here's what these scores are actually measuring, why two devices can disagree about your own body on the same morning, and how to use the number without over-indexing on it.

What HRV actually measures

Heart rate variability is the tiny, millisecond-level variation in time between individual heartbeats. Counterintuitively, more variability is generally a good sign — it reflects a nervous system that can flexibly shift between "rest and digest" and "fight or flight" modes as needed. Less variability (a more metronome-like heartbeat) tends to show up during stress, illness, poor sleep, or overtraining, because your body is staying locked in a more activated state. HRV is the input almost every recovery score is built on top of.

Why recovery scores differ between devices

If HRV is HRV, why do Oura and Whoop sometimes disagree on how recovered you are? Three reasons: sensor placement (finger vs wrist sensors pick up slightly different signal quality), measurement window (some devices sample HRV throughout the night and take the average or a specific sleep stage, others take a single point-in-time reading), and the proprietary algorithm layered on top — each company weights HRV against resting heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep quality differently to produce a single score. There's no universal standard, which is exactly why a head-to-head test matters more than either company's marketing.

Resting heart rate and sleep debt matter too

HRV rarely moves alone. A rising resting heart rate combined with falling HRV is a much stronger signal of accumulated fatigue, illness, or under-recovery than either metric alone. Sleep debt — the gap between how much sleep you actually got and how much your body seems to need — is the other major input. This is why a single bad night doesn't usually tank a recovery score by itself, but a few in a row will.

How to actually use a recovery score

Treat it as a trend, not a daily verdict. A recovery score bouncing between 60 and 80 day to day is normal noise — a slow decline over a week or two is the signal worth acting on. It's also personal: your "good" baseline might be someone else's "bad" day. The most useful way to use these scores is to compare today's number against your own rolling average, not against an arbitrary color threshold, and to notice patterns (does it consistently drop after late nights, alcohol, or a hard training block?) rather than reacting to any single morning.

Should you train through a low recovery score?

Usually, yes, with adjusted intensity rather than a full stop. A low score after one rough night is not a medical signal to rest completely — it's a nudge to maybe swap a max-effort session for an easy one. Repeated low scores over multiple days, especially alongside physical symptoms (soreness, elevated resting heart rate, poor mood), are the pattern actually worth changing your training plan around.
