A wearable buzzes with a resting heart rate number every morning, and most people glance at it the way they'd glance at the weather — noted, then forgotten. That number is one of the more genuinely informative things your device measures, and also one of the most commonly misread.
What resting heart rate actually measures
RHR reflects how many times your heart needs to beat per minute to circulate blood while your body is at rest — which means it's really a measure of efficiency. A heart with a stronger stroke volume (more blood pumped per beat) doesn't need to beat as often to move the same amount of blood, so a lower RHR, within a normal range, generally reflects a heart doing more work per beat rather than a weaker heart doing less.
What the research actually links it to
Large population studies have consistently found elevated resting heart rate associated with higher cardiovascular risk and all-cause mortality, even after adjusting for other factors like age and fitness level. This is a population-level statistical association, not an individual diagnostic tool — a single reading doesn't tell you anything about your own risk on its own, but the research base behind the general pattern is genuinely substantial.
Why "lower is always better" isn't quite right
Trained endurance athletes often have resting heart rates in the 40s, a result of genuine cardiovascular efficiency (athletic bradycardia) — but an unusually low resting heart rate can also, in other contexts, signal a conduction problem or overtraining, not just fitness. The number alone can't tell the difference; it needs context (are you an endurance athlete, has it always been in that range, does it come with symptoms like dizziness or fatigue) before "low" gets interpreted as "good."
How to actually use the trend
As with most single-number wearable metrics, the useful signal is the trend over weeks, not any individual morning.
