What VO2 max actually measures

VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can take in, transport, and use oxygen during intense exercise — essentially the ceiling on your aerobic engine. It's measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute, and it reflects how well your heart, lungs, and muscles work together under maximum demand, not how fit you feel on an average day.

Why it's suddenly a longevity metric

Large cohort studies over the past several years have found cardiorespiratory fitness — measured via VO2 max — to be one of the stronger predictors of all-cause mortality risk available, in some analyses outperforming more traditional risk factors like smoking status or blood pressure. That's a genuinely significant research finding, and it's the real reason VO2 max has moved from an exercise-physiology lab metric into mainstream wearable dashboards over the last few years.

How wearables actually estimate it

A true VO2 max test requires a lab, a mask measuring gas exchange, and exercising to genuine exhaustion — not something any consumer wearable does. Instead, wearables estimate VO2 max algorithmically, based on the relationship between your heart rate and pace during runs or walks, calibrated against population models. These estimates correlate reasonably well with lab measurements in aggregate, but carry a real margin of error for any individual — useful for tracking your own trend over time, less reliable as a precise absolute number to compare against someone else's lab-tested result.

What actually moves the number
