Cold shower duration
For a cold shower to reliably engage the dive reflex rather than just being uncomfortable, the water needs to hit the face directly, not just the body, for at least 30 seconds. Starting with the face specifically (rather than working down from the head) front-loads the trigeminal nerve exposure that actually drives the reflex, rather than spending the most useful seconds acclimating the rest of the body first.
Ice pack placement
An ice pack or cold pack held against the eyes, temples, and upper cheeks — the same trigeminal-nerve-dense area a splash targets — for 30-60 seconds is a lower-intensity, more controllable alternative to a full cold shower, and useful when you need the effect somewhere a shower isn't available. Wrapping the ice pack in a thin cloth prevents skin damage from direct ice contact while still delivering enough cold to trigger the reflex.
Submersion time, if using a bowl of ice water
For the strongest version of the technique, submerging the face in a bowl of ice water (water cold enough to have visible ice, roughly 50-60°F) for 15-30 seconds while holding your breath combines the two elements the reflex evolved around — cold and breath-holding — and tends to produce the most pronounced heart-rate slowing of the three methods here.

The version that works best depends on context: an ice pack for a controlled moment at a desk, a cold shower as a daily built-in practice, bowl submersion when you have privacy and want the strongest effect.
