Slow, extended exhales in particular help activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the body's built-in "calm down" counterpart to fight-or-flight), which speeds the return to baseline rather than just waiting it out passively. This isn't about suppressing the reaction — it's about giving the chemical spike the short window it needs to pass before you act on it.
