The Runner's High Isn't Just Endorphins

Somewhere past the halfway point of a long run, the effort stops feeling like effort. For decades, that floaty, calm euphoria has been credited to a single word: endorphins. The full story turns out to be more interesting, and endorphins may not even be the main character.
The endorphin story has a real problem
Endorphins are large molecules, and large molecules generally don't cross the blood-brain barrier — the protective filter between the bloodstream and the brain — very efficiently. That's a real complication for the classic explanation: measuring elevated endorphins in someone's blood after exercise doesn't necessarily mean much of it is actually reaching the mood-regulating regions of the brain.
A better candidate: the endocannabinoid system
Researchers have found that sustained aerobic exercise raises levels of anandamide, an endocannabinoid the body produces naturally — part of the same receptor system that THC acts on. Unlike endorphins, anandamide is small and fat-soluble enough to cross the blood-brain barrier easily, giving it a much more direct route to actually affecting mood.
Why it takes sustained effort to show up
Both the endorphin and endocannabinoid responses generally require a sustained period of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic effort rather than a short burst — which lines up with runner's high being associated with longer efforts rather than a quick sprint. The body isn't releasing these compounds instantly; it's a gradual buildup tied to sustained cardiovascular demand.
Probably both systems, working together
The current understanding isn't that endorphins were wrong and anandamide is the real answer — it's that runner's high is likely a combined effect of both systems, along with other neurochemical shifts during sustained exercise. The endocannabinoid piece just does a better job explaining why the feeling is a calm, floaty euphoria that clearly reaches the brain rather than staying confined to the bloodstream.
